General Equipment Mechanic

Distinguishing Features of the Class :

This position involves responsibility for performing a variety of skilled repair and maintenance work on a variety of trucks, mowers and other equipment and machinery.  General supervision is received from a higher level supervisor, permitting considerable leeway for planning technical details of each assignment.  General supervision may be exercised over a small number of helpers and/or laborers.  Does related work as required.

 

Typical Work Activities and Expectations:

  • Performs skilled operations in repairing and rebuilding gasoline-powered equipment, including trucks, tractors, passenger cars, power mowers, roto-tillers, chloroboats, and stump remover;
  • Overhauls, repairs, and lubricates tractors, mowers and related equipment;
  • Repairs or overhauls brake systems, differentials, carburetors, clutches, transmissions, and front and rear axles;
  • Grinds adjusts, and backlaps a variety  of  power  driven and hand mowing machines;
  • Dismantles  and  rebuilds  defective  or  damaged  auxiliary  equipment on tractors and mowers;
  • Operates machine shop equipment including lathes, grinders, drill press and other machines to make, rebuild or repair           parts for above auxiliary equipment;
  • Performs necessary repairs to machines, tools and other shop equipment used in work;
  • Converts conventional machinery to use for special purposes;
  • Designs, builds, and paints steel and wooden playground equipment;
  • Does arc and acetylene welding;
  • Makes body and fender repairs;
  • Grinds valves and fits new bearings, pistons and rings;
  • Assembles and times engines;
  • Adjusts steering mechanisms and aligns wheels;
  • Performs a variety of related duties as required.

  • Thorough knowledge of standard automotive repair methods and terminology and tools of the trade;

Maintenance Mechanic (HVAC) - Refrigeration Tech.

Distinguishing Features of the Class Maintenance Mechanic (HVAC) Role:

This is skilled maintenance work involving the responsibility for the operation, maintenance and repair of building heating, ventilating, air conditioning, and related systems.  Supervision is received from the Director of Educational Facilities.  Supervision may be exercised over subordinate cleaning and maintenance personnel.  The incumbent does related work as required.

 

Typical Work Activities and Maintenance Mechanic (HVAC) Expectations:

  • Develops appropriate operating, repair, maintenance and safety practices for heating, ventilating, air conditioning, and related equipment and systems;
  • Repairs and replaces electrical controls, thermostats, relays, pumps and related equipment;
  • Investigates and resolves complaints concerning heating and ventilating;
  • Makes emergency repairs to equipment and takes emergency action in connection with equipment failure to insure reinstatement of serviceability;
  • Installs and repairs electrical systems;
  • Installs and repairs plumbing and piping;
  • Makes recommendations in the purchase of equipment and supplies;
  • May review work done by contractors;
  • May perform work in other trades;
  • May be required to participate in snow and ice control activities;
  • May be required to operate a motor vehicle in connection with assignments;
  • Performs a variety of related duties as required.

Information Processing Specialist II

Distinguishing Features of the Class and Information Processing Specialist II Role

This position involves responsibility for performing complex information processing activities often involving the utilization of word processing and related software.  This position differs from that of Information Processing Specialist I in that the activities performed are more complex.  Incumbents format, type, revise and print text, reports, budgets, etc. following well-established guidelines.  Additionally, when not engaged in equipment operation, an incumbent performs a variety of clerical duties.  General supervision may be exercised over a variety of Information Processing Specialist I and other clerical positions.  The work is performed under general supervision of a higher level employee.  The incumbent does related work as required.

 

Typical Work Activities and Information Processing Specialist II Expectations

  • Assigns and reviews work and instructs new employees in specialized clerical and/or information processing activities of a unit; Designs parameters for selective information storage on information processing equipment to produce specialized outputs of this information in response to users' needs;
  • Designs methods of assembling pre-recorded pieces of information (usually each having a number of variables to be inserted) into complete documents;
  • Designs complex formats and layouts for work assignments;
  • Creates word processing, spreadsheets or data base designs based on oral and written directions;
  • Creates charts, statistical reports and/or performs mathematical computations;
  • Manipulates data to produce requested reports;
  • Chooses document formats and designs document layouts to be used for entering information which will be printed in selected areas on pre-printed forms;
  • May use e-mail as a communications linkage;
  • Types complex charts, statistical reports and/or performs mathematic computations;
  • Discusses assigned projects with supervisors to clarify specific needs and problems;
  • May attend meetings outside the normal business hours, records the minutes of the meeting and transcribes the minutes;
  • Performs a variety of clerical functions related to the position.

  • Thorough knowledge of the use and operation of information processing equipment and related peripheral equipment;
  • Thorough knowledge and skill in classic desk top applications including word processing, spreadsheets and data bases;
  • Good knowledge of office terminology and procedures;
  • Good knowledge of proper grammatical usage and punctuation;
  • Good knowledge of business vocabulary;
  • Ability to plan and supervise the work of others;
  • Ability to design complex formats and layouts for work assignments;
  • Ability to understand and follow complex oral and written directions; accuracy.
