DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: This is semi-skilled work involving responsibility for performing a wide variety of building maintenance and repair tasks. General supervision is received from a Labor Foreman, Head Utility Worker, Head General Mechanic, or a higher level skilled employee. Supervision may be exercised over subordinate cleaning or maintenance workers. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:
- Repairs office and/or school furniture;
- Repairs plumbing fixtures;
- Replaces window glass and cords;
- Repairs and installs fences;
- Builds forms for concrete work;
- Mixes mortar;
- Installs playground equipment;
- Assists in cleaning and repair of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning equipment;
- Cuts and threads pipe;
- Sets up scaffolding;
- Prepares room set-ups and knock downs according to room schedules;
- Washes walls, ceilings, and windows;
- Paints walls and ceilings;
- Acts as a substitute custodian;
- Loads and unloads trucks and occasionally drives motor vehicles;
- Mows and rakes lawns and trims shrubs and trees;
- Removes snow from sidewalks;
- Performs a variety of related work as required;
- May prepare and maintain simple records and reports.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Working knowledge of building maintenance practices; working knowledge of general mechanics, tools and equipment usage, terminology and safety precautions, ability to follow oral and written instructions; mechanical aptitude.

(B) An equivalent combination of experience and training as defined by (A) above.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Must possess a New York State driver's license (Class 5) at time of appointment.
