Job Description

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: This position exists in the Schenectady City School District and involves the responsibility for the coordination and facilitation of the district’s Behavior Intervention programs and support systems.  The incumbent serves as the in-house training specialist to provide training to school staff.  The work is performed under the supervision of a district administrator in the Office of Student Support Services. Performs related work as required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:

  • Monitors implementation of building/district behavior intervention initiatives;
  • Demonstrates a strong understanding and knowledge of data collection & analysis; 
  • Has experience working with students with disabilities; 
  • Coordinates and/or collects district behavior intervention initiatives outcome data;
  • Coordinates/facilitates building and district Behavior Intervention collaboration meetings;
  • Assists in the development/execution of plan for expanding and sustaining successful behavior intervention initiatives;
  • Is active in leadership and support for the overall implementation of Positive Behavior and Supports Program (PBIS) and for developing building-based PBIS leadership teams;
  • Organizes/coordinates district behavior intervention staff development including participating in ongoing training and technical assistance to ensure effective implementation of the program for all students, including those with intensive needs;
  • Collects, analyzes, and reviews school wide data and uses this data to guide intervention supports and services;
  • Participates in training school teams on a variety of topics around behavior intervention; 
  • Participates in threat assessment training, school safety committees, and evaluation strategies; 
  • Provides training and modeling in classroom management techniques to reduce behavior problems;
  • Provides initial training to teacher aides at commencement of employment focusing on de-escalation techniques;
  • Provides other school safety and student wellness training as needed.
  • Leads school teams in development of functional behavioral assessment & behavior intervention plans. 
  • Lends expertise and training in autism programs, to include Communication/PECS, & Applied Behavior Analysis. 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:  Good knowledge of adolescent development;  good knowledge of service programs and other community resources;  ability to exercise good judgment in dealing with people; ability to establish and work cooperatively with others;  ability to write and verbally communicate effectively; ability to observe and accurately analyze a variety of situations; ability to make timely and sound decisions; ability to work a flexible work schedule including evenings and summers; works from a trauma informed, & culturally responsive lens, has experience working with urban populations.

Job Qualifications
  1. Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State college or university with a Bachelor’s degree; OR
  2. Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State college with an Associate’s degree and two (2) years of experience in a school environment working with students; OR
  3. Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and four (4) years of experience as defined in (B) above; OR
  4. An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of (A), (B) and (C) above.

Note:  Appropriate volunteer/part-time experience, which can be verified, will be accepted on a pro-rated basis for up to one year of the required experience

This position is a provisional civil service appointment and applicant must meet civil service requirements including residency in Schenectady County or one of the contiguous counties. Successful candidates are required to take civil service exam when offered.
