DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:
This position exists in a school district and involves the responsibility for encouraging cooperation between parents and the school. The McKinney-Vento Parent Liaison position will work with families who are specifically living in temporary housing as deemed protected under the McKinney-Vento Act. The work is performed under the supervision of the Innovation Equity and Engagement Department with wide leeway given for carrying out the details of the work

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:

  • ? Work with families placed by DSS in designated shelters to promote positive outcomes for students
    ? Work within the shelter’s family room to help facilitate and promote positive family/child interactions
    ? Encourages cooperation between the parents and the school;
    ? Works with parents and families to address concerns and to foster communication between the home and the school;
    ? Assist families with connections to community resources
    ? Work directly with District McKinney-Vento Liaisons to meet needs of families including but not limited to distributing hygiene supplies, clothing, school supplies, etc.
    ? Help reduce attendance barriers for students living in temporary housing
    ? Assist families with completing district or building level surveys
    ? Assist families in registering for afterschool or summer programming
    ? Be a connection with building level parent liaisons to assist families in temporary housing
    ? Make connections with hard to reach parents;
    ? Link families and schools.
    ? Assists families with the school to promote greater student success;
    ? Increases parental involvement;
    ? Increases communication with the families and the community;
    ? Informs and assists families with services, resources, and activities that are on-going within the district and community;
    ? Increases parent participation in the school and district decision making;
    ? Helps schools and the district cultivate a school culture that embraces values and interacts with parents in a positive manner;
    ? Collaborates with schools in educating parents to helping their children succeed in school;
    ? Does related tasks as required

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

  • Good knowledge of educational programs; working knowledge of the principles and practices of social casework; Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with others; Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing; ability to work flexible hours including evenings; cultural sensitivity; organizational skill; tact; courtesy.

SALARY: $18.36-20.34/hour

  • Graduation from high school or possession of an equivalency diploma.
    SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: (at time of appointment)
    Anticipated hours will be 9:00-5:00
    Must possess a valid NYS Driver’s License.

Candidates must meet civil service requirements for appointment. Candidates must currently hold this title or be reachable on the civil service list when available.
