DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: This position exists in a school district and involves the responsibility for providing assistance and support to the head of Transportation or the Transportation Supervisor. The work consists of managing the district’s transportation computer system. The work is performed under the general supervision of the Transportation Supervisor with leeway allowed for independent judgment in carrying out the details of the work. Supervision may be exercised over subordinate personnel in the absence of the department head. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:
- Operates the district’s computerized fleet routing and scheduling program;
- Prepares time schedules for bus routes for public school and non-public school pupils in the district;
- May act as a liaison between school district and parents regarding pupil transportation problems and issues;
- Assists the Transportation Supervisor or other official in the development of computerized bus routes in accordance with established policies and State Education Guidelines;
- Works closely with bus dispatchers and drivers on route changes to assure safety and timeliness;
- May maintain time records on transportation personnel and payroll;
- Coordinates emergency evacuation drills with drivers and school building personnel;
- Performs word processing, spreadsheet and database management on district computer;
- Prepares a variety of records and reports as required by Department of Motor Vehicles and State Education Department;
- May include dispatching as necessary
- Does a variety of related work, as required.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Good knowledge of standard transportation methods and the operation of bus fleets; good knowledge of modern budgets and techniques; good knowledge of the principles and modern practices of accounting; good knowledge of current computer word processing and database software applications; ability to keep records and make reports; ability to get along well with others; ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing; good judgment; tact; courtesy.
SALARY: : $39,336-$43,718/year Commensurate w/ exp

QUALIFICATIONS:
(A) Graduation from a regionally accredited or NYS registered two year college or university with an Associate’s Degree in Business Administration, Public Administration, Transportation Planning, Secretarial Science or a related field and one (1) year of experience in accounting, budgeting, bookkeeping or dispatching which shall have involved the use of a computer. OR;
(B) Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and three (3) years of experience as defined by the limits of (A) above. OR;
(C) An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of (A) and (B) above
This position is a provisional civil service appointment and applicant must meet civil service requirements including residency in New York State. Successful candidates are required to take civil service exam when offered.
