*Grant Funded Position through 6/30/2026

Position works 8 A.M. - 4 P.M. Monday - Friday

RESPONSIBILITIES: The work involves the performance of a wide variety of duties related to supporting students who are in temporary housing.  Primary emphasis is on providing counseling and guidance to students and their families to help them overcome obstacles and barriers to being in school and assist the family with social service needs.  Other duties include the dissemination of information on programs and services provided by the school and local community agencies.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:

  • Understand all federal guidelines as they pertain to the eligibility of children and provision of services for McKinney-Vento Homeless Program
  • Understand and have knowledge of the McKinney-Vento Act
  • Assist families by informing them of educational and related opportunities available to their children and are provided with meaningful opportunities to participate in the education of their children
  • Coordinate with designees, and school staff to assist with services and supplies that benefit children, youth and families.
  • Monitor attendance of students in temporary housing
  • Assist parents living in motels, shelter, doubling up with referrals for food, clothing and shelter
  • Network with community agencies to provide appropriate referrals to agencies, organizations, housing and health care
  • Assist families with resources and services to overcome homelessness
  • Advocate and expedite services for homeless population
  • Utilize crisis intervention skills, case management and community resources knowledge to support the family to move toward greater family stabilization for better school performance when possible
  • Maintain documentation on all services provided to children and youth
  • Provide parents, guardians and unaccompanied youths with information and services, including transportation to and from the school of origin nand are assisted in accessing transportation services
  • School personnel receive professional development and other support
  • Develops needed community resources and maintains working relationships with these groups and programs for hard to serve students
  • Case management services, requiring home visits, to families residing in shelters, motels or doubled up with families in the community.
  • Collaborate with a variety of Schenectady School District offices including but not limited to Registration, Transportation, Students Support Services and School Buildings
  • Performs a variety of related duties as required

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Good knowledge of group and individual counseling; Working knowledge of services provided in a school district; Working knowledge of the public and private agencies available to provide assist families in temporary housing; Ability to evaluate student interests and aptitudes; Ability to work with students in a variety of counseling and educational guidance situations; Ability to work in a team approach as part of an educational support team when primary goals are educational success; Ability to follow oral and written directions; Ability to maintain records.                                                                                                                                                                         

Job Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • A. Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with a Master’s Degree in Social Work

    B. Licensed Master Social Worker or Licensed Clinical Social worker and hold a School Social Worker Certificate.
